I have been seeing auctions on ebay for Region Free and Macrovision Free DVD players that were "Professionally Upgraded" by the ebay sellers. How and why would you do this?

Here is a link to one of the auctions: HERE.

Thanks for any info you may have.

Upgrading to region free or Macrovision is SUPER EASY!!!! Is does not take a professional to do it. Usallly, you make a DVD player Region free, all you have to do is access the hidden screen on the dvd player and set it to region free. To turn your Macrovision off on you DVD player so that you can record DVD's onto a VHS, it usually only means burning a program onto a disk and letting your dvd player read it. PM me and ill give you a site where they post a lot of info on a lot of differnet dvd players on how to to these two things.

Maybe he has some PAL Region videos he'd like to watch. That is the reason I made mine region free.

Please convince me how fixing a piece of electronic equipment to view a DVD I purchased is in any way equivalent to stealing software? The bottom line for me is that Hollywood has 0 right telling me what version of a movie I am allowed to view in the privacy of my home or whether ot not I can tape that DVD so long as I do not redistribute it.

DVD's manufactured for use in Europe or Asia will not play in North American DVD players, and vice versa. The world is divided into regions. Making a DVD player "region free" means that it will play any DVD, regardless of region. Kinda handy for anandtechers who trade them internationally.

Actualy, according to the law, they do. read the DMCA sometime.

I could be wrong but I believe the region requirement is part of the license signed by equipment manufacturers to allow them to use the decoding algorithm to play a DVD. If there is a law that applies to consumers modifying the equipment after purchase I am not aware of it.

If there is something in the DMCA that makes it illegal for me to do whatever I please with a piece of electronics equipment I purchased I will joyfully ignore it. Once again if I pay for a legal DVD I do not care what region it was intended for, as far as I am concerned it is within my right to view it irregardless of that piece of Hollywood payed for garbage known as the DMCA.

Edit: By doing whatever I please with electronics equipment does not imply I think it right to do things that cause it to emit RF emissions that would interfere with broadcast signals etc.

I didn't know it was possible. You are both ignorant and stupid. Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't give you the right to ignore it. Moron.

I will admit I am ignorant of most provisions of the DMCA however I am neither stupid nor a moron. Actually everyone of us ignores laws we don't agree with almost every day. Are consenting adults engaging in sexual acts in the privacy of their own residence regarding which there are laws on the books against both "ignorant and stupid"? Neither you nor I are completely aware of the myriad of laws that sit on the books that we may be breaking in our day to day lives. From this thread I have been made aware of the fact that there may be a provision in the DMCA regarding the end user of DVD players. Personally since I think there is about as much chance of it being enforced against the end user as there is of the sodomy police breaking into my house I will show the same regard for it. If that makes me stupid and a moron well at least I will be a happy stupid moron watching whatever DVD I please in my house. :D

The founding fathers broke plenty of laws. Did they do it because they were stupid and ignorant morons, or because the laws were not just?

True, but they didn't ask for information on how to break laws on public forums. Sure, go ahead and figure out how to circumvent whatever you want. Just don't be bragging about it or saying that you should be able to ignore a rule because you don't like it. And these copyright laws don't even compare to the unjust laws broken by the founding fathers.

Ever wonder why you don't see many (if any) region-free players around?

Don't forget that in some states it is illegal to have sex in any position other than the missionary. Gotta love the arcane laws on our books ;)

Anyway, back to the original question.

How to mod it depends on the brand/model. Some have a hidden menu you can get to. Some you can flash with a moded ROM with a CD-R. Some you need to add or replace a chip in the unit.

Here is one of many sites that may have your model/brand listed and what to do.

Personally I feel that bringing topics like this out into the open is exactly what is needed. The vast majority of people are probably not even aware that they have been restricted to a particular version of a DVD based on their geographic location. As for the copyright laws there are a lot of us that feel that the DMCA is a perversion of the copyright laws that evolved over the past couple hundred years. I maintain that in todays climate you would not be able to organize anything resembling a public library. I suspect that the only reason they still exist is because politicians realize that trying to eliminate them to protect the so called interests of copyright holders would result in an outcry not seen before and finally focus the public on exactly what they and their friends in the RIAA and the MPAA are trying to force down our throats.

Is this illegal? Anybody?

Most likely.

Why the hell would it be? Once you own the dvd player you can do anything you want to it, just no warranty and you probably can't resell it.

My understanding is that it is illegal for manufacturers to sell region free players, but it is not illegal for you to own one. So after you buy it, you can do what ever the fsck you want to it.
