How do you...uh..."measure" your computer?

For all you people who overclock or benchmark your rig, how do you do it? I guess I mean...what programs do you use to measure performance, temperature, wattage, voltage, or whatever else you measure? And where can I find out what all that means?

Sorry, I'm completely new to this, and since I'm going to be building a new computer in the next month or two (and may possibly consider overclocking it), I want to start learning how to measure what, and what it all means. I would search the forums a little more, but I'm a little short on time these days to spend too much time browsing. Can anyone explain to me what they look for, what programs they use (preferably freeware or shareware) to measure their computer's performance, etc.? Or point me to a link?

Thanks folks.

Cheers,
Jeff

I, too, am a relative newcomer to this business. I've read reviews for years where various benchmarks are graphed a quoted in comparison studies.

I started using PassMark Performance Test (currently at version 5.0, I think, but haven't checked).

SiSoft Sandra '04 has its strong points for certain things.

PCMark04 is useful for other things.

I should probably move to version "05" on these latter two. SiSoft "bugs me" because the '04 version doesn't detect all the thermal sensors on my mobo.
