What is the easiest way to type in characters like èéêàççÇ, without using character map? Surely people who needs to regularly type in German, French etc can't afford to use character map everytime and I'd imagine many users in Canada needs to type in English as well as French..

Easiest way is to use Alt + the corresponding ASCII-code.

E.g.: Alt + 137 (on numeric pad) corresponds to ë.

So when people in Quebec write something like this in French,

donnez-moi le jus d'orange s'il vous plaît

they have to type donnez-moi le jus d'orange s'il vous pla Alt 0238 t ?

I have my keyboard set to the dutch input locale, i can type accented letters by combining e.g. the quote key with a letter.
Like this :
" + e = ë
' + e = é
`+ e = è
~ + n = ñ
' + c = ç

In Microsoft Word, you can just press CTRL + ' and then the letter you want accented.

For example press CTRL + ' and then let go and of both keys and press e and you'll get é. You can do this with the accent marks pointing backwards by replacing the apostrophe above with that quotation mark that's on the same key as the tilde. You can also do CTRL + ~ and then n to get ñ.
