How do you turn off sound effects in XP?

I just got the Hoontech SD DBIII today. I installed the most recent creative labs drivers and now all my sound has this really ugly reverb added to it. I've already tried uninstalling all the Creative software and drivers. I'm back to running the generic sb live drivers from winxp but the reverb is still there. This is really starting to get annoying. Under sounds>volume>speaker settings>advanced there's supposed to be a tab for "effects" but according to the help file, it's only enabled when a usb device is attached. I can't figure out how to stop this effect and I'm almost to the point of just reinstalling windows. (Yes, it's that bad.)
