How do you think modern day composers get started?

For example, John Williams. He seems to write the soundtrack for like half of all modern movies. How do you think he got himself in that position back when movie studios were comfy with ANOTHER composer? Just write up some examples and show them and say "Hey, look how good this"?

I think that would be an awesome job if you're good at it.

i met one of those top composers at a party-- there are about 10 guys that do all the major hollywood movies. once you get to that level you can pretty much work for life.

So how do you think they get comfy with them in the first place? Seems so hard to get into that.

Maybe that'd actually be a really tough job.
