How do you test SATA speeds?

I just got an SATAII Hard Drive(my very 1st one) and I'd liek to test speeds between my current IDE drives and the SATAII one.Is there a program that can help me? I don't see/feel any differences in performance,I heard that some HDs need enable SATA II for it to function.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

SATA II isn't noticeably faster than SATA I in general use, it just adds the power of Marketing to your rig. Bask in the glow of Marketing as your load times . . . . stay exactly the same.

Yeah, thats fine but I want to enable it anyways lol.Icame from ATA 100 SATA1 should be good enough though.

I read SATA II is great ....but no hard drives support the speeds yet not even SATA 1 speeds have been maxxed 🙁

HDTach should do some sequential transfer tests.

You can compare graphs. Thats what I did with my Seagate 7200.8 SATA 250 and my Hitachi Desktar 7K250 160gb PATA. Definitely noticeable difference. But they are two different drives. Maybe comparing a 7200.8 PATA vs SATA would be nice...

HDTach will let you test your sustained and burst speeds. Real world SATA2 is not faster than SATA1, which was not much faster than ATA100. SATA2 drives are often faster than SATA1 drives, but this is because they are newer models, not because of the interface.

Agreed.

Thats why I would like to see a comparison of 7200.10 drives.. SATA 2 vs PATA.

Also a 7200.9 250gb or 300gb vs a 7200.8 250 vs 300gb (SATA1 vs SATA2). I just know these 2 drives are almost the same, and the revisions should be minimal. Platter size is the same, so iono. It seems Seagate didn't change much in the 2 series for certain drives.

I have 4 PATA HDs ...well 5 really but I just removed the 40GB one last night.I just downloaded HDtach and will be testing it soon, thanks guys! 🙂
