How do you test laptop parts without another laptop?

I have a broken laptop that hit the floor. If I plug to the AC outlet the only thing that happens is a couple small green lights from the case light up. I don't hear or see anything other than that. How can I see if any of these parts work?
I have some desktops, but no other laptops.
The LCD of this Dell 600c (I think) has dozens of fine fractures so that is a gonner. I tried plugging an external LCD into the VGA port but no joy.

What can I do to find out if there's anything to salvage, if not outright fix?

You might be able to hook a monitor upto the laptop vga [if there is one for external monitor].
You also can test the hdd by getting an adapter that will convert 2.5inch to 3.5inch IDE. If you cover the postage, I will send you one.

Other than that, I don't think you can test many more components.
