how do you test an sd card?

All you have to do to test is write data. Take a big media file and copy it to the SD card multiple times until it fills up.

fake cards? Can you elaborate a little please.

Its simple. Some unscrupulous manufactures "fiddle" with the SD cards controller, f.x. making a 16GB card appear as a 64GB card to the OS. This way they can peddle 64GB cards at lower cost then the competition. When space runs out, well strange things can happen...

The old saying applies: if its too cheap to be true, it usually is.

I got one of these before, only in my case it was actually 2GB card advertised as a 64GB card. I copied a bunch of pictures and songs, then followed by a 4GB+ movie file. Well, everything in the card became practically corrupted/unreadable.
