How do you tell what resolutions your video card supports?

I'm thinking of getting a wide screen LCD, probably 22". I have a BFG 6800GT w/256mb. How can I tell what resolutions it will do/supports?

I can't find any info at BFG and apparently some people had problems, particuarly with BFG 6800GT's when the first came out. I would think it would be too hard to find this info, but I haven't been able to find out too much?

If anybody here has already been through this that can give me some good advice, I'd sure appreciate it.

I think what you will find is you want to do everything in 1680x1050.

I have a 22" monitor and a Radeon x850xt and it will do up to Half-Life 2 at that resolution nicely. The problem is I dont trust any game beyond that to play smooth so I am hoping for a video card upgrade soon.

I also use an NForce4 with onboard video that can do 1680x1050 nicely but I dont dare game on it. Your video card should easily support that resolution in 2D its the 3d you need to be concerned with.

Im sure you can find benchmarks comparing our 2 cards. What no one tells you about large LCD screens is you need equally powerfull video cards to drive them.

I did have to turn off an auto detect monitor setting on my ATI card but that was not a problem with the Nvidia chipset.

Is there a program or some other way I can test my video card to see what resolutions it supports?

dude itll work fine. i have an FX5200 and i get 1680x1050 (not dvi tho)

All video cards support most every resolution unless you go waaaaaay back; I found a Rage3D card in an old computer that wouldn't do 1680x1050, but that's rare...

I'd certainly be quite surprised if that 6800GT didn't support 1680x1050.

Video cards can support any resolution you like. The only possible limitations come in the form of the RAMDAC and lack of dual-link DVI on older cards which may lower the maximum resolution.

New cards will do up to 2048x1536 VGA and 2560x1600 DVI and any resolution less than that.
