I'm not a doctor, but i actually broke my ankle doing a running jump while playing basketball. You can tell if it's a break vs a sprain if the ankle hurts so bad even when you're not standing. The pain would feel unbearable.
I have had sprains that have swollen up like softballs, or close. A couple times I was sure there was a break because I felt a strong pop as well. Anyhow I got x-rays and they were negative. Sprains/ligament injuries can be unbelievably painful - there's often no possible way you can tell without x-rays.

you probably just rolled it. my friend has done that a few times while skateboarding. not a pretty site.

If you can't put weight on it without it hurting like mad, it's broken. I broke mine and it was the most painful thing I've ever experienced.

Edit: You might be able to put weight on it now (I could, but barely, and it hurt). If you can't tomorrow (I had to hop around the hospital because I didn't have crutches yet), you need to get it checked out.

I was in the very same condition two weeks ago. I have a small fracture that was caught upon further examination of my x-rays by a specialist.

It's either sprained or broken 😀

Definitely go see a doctor and have an x-ray done.

I've broken BOTH ankles and it's no fun.
What Rossman fails to tell you is that he broke them in a mad door rush at best buy's black friday sale llast holiday season.
