How do you tell if a watch is a counterfeit?

I have that watch. I got it from my brother as a gift, which he got it as a gift from his cousin in china.
We're guessing it's most likely a counterfeit. But just to make sure, is there anyway to tell if it's real or fake?
It looks identical to the one in the picture, even has the holographic sticker on the bottom and serial numbers engraved in the steel band.

1. He got it in china.
2. What does he do for a living?
3. Is he that well off to buy you a $10K watch?

Common sense.

A real Rolex will have a smooth second hand, fakes have the second hand that "ticks"??

At least thats how you used to be able to tell anyway.

If the second hand moves smoothly and does not tick its probably real. Best bet would be to take it to a jeweler or pawn shop.

I'm just guessing it possibly could be real, because my brother is pretty close to his cousin and his cousin never told my bro it was a counterfeit when he gave it to him.
I'm guessing 95% chance that it is fake because he's from china, but I just want to be sure.

The second hand doesn't really go tick tock, but it moves like 5 times a second, so it looks semi smooth, but not exactly.

Can't you call Rolex with the serial number on the back to see if it's legit?

yep it's fake *confirmed*
I looked up the model number written on the hologram sticker on the back, and it matched up to the submariner series.
I looked up the model number for the oyster daytona, and it showed that my watch had a different model number.

You can see it. Just look at how the 'seconds' move. A real Rolex moves with small ticks. A fake moves with bigger steps since it is a quartz.

so what kind of movement does a rolex use. I'm clueless on fine watches.
