how do you tell if a sock is dirty?

Why dont you just toss it into the hamper, its just one freaking sock. If you're gonna run out if you are missing one sock then i would suggest getting another pack of 6.

My rule is, if I have to ask, it's dirty. It's only clean if I absolutely, positively, from a distance can tell it's clean.

BTW this was from back when I used to cruise my teenager's rooms for money and, oh yeah, laundry. For me it's the same as the other answers, if I can't smell it from a few feet away it's fine.
