how do you tell if a sock is dirty?

if you find a sock lying around in your room, how do you tell if its dirty?

looking for solutions that dont involve smelling it... my feet stink and i dont even like taking a whiff of my own dirty socks.

check for crustiness...if its crusty its gotta go. then take a quick whiff of it at about 2 feet distance. if you cant smell it..its okay to wear in public. if you really want to know if its dirty..take it to 2inches from your nose and take a big whiff.
