how do you switch Japanese Windows XP to English?

How do I make menus and such have english captions instead of japanese?

get the english version. I think the best you can do is just get the ability to write in English.
I know if you take the gnlish version, and "localize" it, you can get even the dates to appear in the respective language...but it makes the fonts ugly

They don't really switch. There are differeent versions for different languages.
