Server with 10x hot swap drives:

9x1TB drives in raid 5. 6.3TB of space. 3.4TB used now. There's one drive for OS.

Full rack:

Those IBM arrays are for occasional backups, but I don't really power them on that often. I don't have enough UPS power to keep them on all the time and I can't put non IBM drives in there so I don't really want to rely on it due to not being able to replace any drive that fails. Got it for free so can't complain, but I don't use it for production.

I eventually want to get one of those 24 bay supermicro cases and build my own SAN, as my current server is on it's last legs. IT chokes up when there's too much IO/cpu usage and VMs start to crash.

nice setup. those IBM N Series? looks like it from the drives.

It's a IBM 1710-10U EXP100. Top 2 enclosures are 400GB drives and the bottom 2 are 250GB drives. If I recall I have the top two configured as a single raid 6 with like 4 hot spares. Have not powered it on in a while. I'm always a bit nervous since it's not on a UPS. I need a bigger UPS setup for that thing, it's like 900 watts LOL.

I want to look at that for my next setup. Currently using Linux md raid, that is pretty solid too.

I've got whs11 with 3 1tb drives, 1 2tb drive & a 2tb drive for backup. I back up all my files from the 1tbs to my 2tb & my external is a back of the 2tb. I'm running out of room & should've picked up the 3tbs when they were on sale a wk ago :(

I have two external 4T HD. I was thinking on going the NAS route but I figured thta will be about $300 before any HD, on top of that I still needed a backup plan that should run outside the NAS, so the two external was more cost efficient for me.

What? You mean didn't build a brand new ZFS system RAIDz2 with 12x1TB Seagate Constellations and 32GB of ECC RAM in a brand new rack mount system?

This guy is the smartest person in the room. Seriously. Analyze the situation and find the most cost effective solution. Wish I had this kind of discipline.... so does my financial advisor.

Everyone has different needs. Seriously, a lot of the posters in this thread have come up with good solutions that fit their needs, I only see a few which seem to me to have gone overboard.

I needed one that could run other programs as well, was small and easy to move, and could let me access my drives even when my gaming / main system was down or booted into another OS (and access remotely via my blackberry over the net), my solution was the best most economical best fit for that job, and because it has UEFI and was built out of high quality parts, it will last a good 10 years before it must be replaced to expand capacity with what will be a decent amount that long from now. :)

I was a little tongue in cheek. Sorry if I offended anyone.

No pics offhand, but the specs are in my sig. 6TB RAID 5 for media, 1TB RAID 1 for documents and other important things. I went with OpenMediaVault over FreeNAS because I wanted to use the system as a virtualization host as well. I got the core server components (quad core xeon, 16gb ram, supermicro mobo, SAS 15k drive) for under $200.

First, thanks for the replies.

Background: Home Windows 8 pc (3TB space), Macbook Air, 3 Ipads, 3 Iphones, Boxee Box, ASUS AC66U router.

I want to unload all my MP3's and MKV movies that I have on my Hard Drive, and move them to a NAS. This will free up my Hard Drives and help better organize my files. I want my MP3's on a NAS, which my Home PC Itunes can access and stream. I want my MKV files on a NAS, so I can stream them to my Boxee (opposed to SMB share off my Windows 8 box). Does it sound like a NAS is the best solution for me?

If so, I see a lot of positive feedback on Synology products. Seems like no local stores here in Chicago carry these. I looked at Microcenter, and see a D-Link DNS-325. Would this be a major downgrade over a Synology (DS212j 2200)?

I'm trying to find one that already has HD's in it, but those seem tough to find.

Opinions please.
It sounds like your needs are similar to mine. I only have a couple of concerts stored in video, so I'm much lighter on that end. I have a Synology 212J with 2x 1TB drives in RAID1. There's an add on USB 1TB drive that it backs up to as an extra measure.

I have a lot of digital photos stored on the NAS. I ripped all of my CDs (about 300) to FLAC and also converted to 256K MP3 format on the NAS. There are 40 or so albums that were purchased as MP3s as well. It's served to a wired Windows 7 desktop that feeds my home theater via HDMI, a Windows 7 laptop and a netbook via wireless. The only issue is the netbook can be laggy, but that's really a function of lack of netbook power. I can easily play music and work with photos on both other systems without running out of steam.

When I had an ipod itunes could work with the MP3 files and it was seamless. I've since become itunes free, but that's completely unrelated to the NAS.
