>So how do you know which disk you are selecting?

You move a slider to the disc number that you want to come out. There is a little index sheet on the case where you can write what disc is at what number, although I don't use it.

I use an indexing program called Where Is It that keeps track of all the files on all the discs and what case and number they are stored at. This allows you to still do file searches on archived content without actually loading the discs.

All my discs are double sided now anyway (I ended undergrad with over 1500 single sided CD-Rs and realized I needed to move to double sided DVD-R), so I'd have to number no matter what system I used.

the biggest influence on CD durability I've noticed (other than scratches) is exposure to sunlight. the high quality discs I have (mitsui/kodak) from 99-00 have failed quickly if in an area (even in a jewel case with inserts) that got some direct sun through a window. Virtually everything I've kept in binders and drawers has fared quite well. binders work well for me, but that's only because the discs are backups that don't get taken in and out all that often. if I needed to access them often I'd put them in jewel cases in a cupboard with opaque doors.

CDs in a binder or a slim jewel case. DVDs in the slim DVD cases from Sams that look like actual cases.

lol all 3, and I have about 300. About 100 are organized in a binder by genre in my dorm, but the rest are just thrown around in my room at home somewhere.

Spindle. I have a bunch sitting around from packs of blank CD-Rs so I just use them up.
