Hey i was wondering, How does one start their own dot com extension, like .com or .biz, or .net. Don't get me wrong, I know how to start my own domain, but how do you start your own extension?

Don't like three different governing bodies have to approve it? I know it took forever for .tv to get approved.

you could set up your own domain servers and get everybody who wants to go to your domain to download a plugin for their browser
that's what some company did a while ago

.tv is for entertainment sites, .biz is for businesses. They were recently set up, but I'll be damned if I ever see any sites using them.

Uhhhh
Actually .tv is the ccTLD for the country Tuvalu. Smart Tuvaluans who knew that their own people probably weren't going to go apesh!t buying up .tv domains decided they could raise some money marketing them to western entertainment ships.

Recently (2000) IC@NN approved 7 new TLDs (http://www.icann.org/tlds/).

If you want to create a new TLD I suppose you'd have to try and push it through IC@NN and I doubt that's likely.

Or you could try and push it through yourself as mentioned above.

thanks that site is pretty much what i am looking for. I have an idea for a :TLD" but didn't know how i would go about implementing it..but it kinda looks like its more trouble then its worth.

Yeh, IC@NN is a pain to deal with, but pretty much anything to do with naming is supposed to go through them.
