I believe his implication is you then had to pay a large bill (lets assume $50 on the cheap end) for the next 24 months.
Do the math and you're about $800 in the hole.
However the logical person would realize that you probably signed that contract knowing you wouldn't change carriers for 2 years or more, leaving that cost out of the equation, as you would have had to pay it either way.
