rich text files that is.
How do I search for a string in all the test type files on any hard drive? WinXP had it so you could search within files as well as search for files.

Control Panel -> Indexing Options -> Advanced -> File Types -> Choose the file type you're interested in searching, switch from index properties only to index properties and contents.

Once the index gets re-built you should be able to search the contents of those file types.

now how do I search(I must be doing it wrong because I used a known word that was in several of the txt files which if it was looking IN the files it should have shown up several times), I did my search from the seach bar in my D,e, and F drives it failed to find anything and that was with a known.

Are you sure the index was re-built and that for .txt files you selected "index properties and contents"? The index rebuild should take a bit of time.

The topic title was: how do you search for something inside text files

Everything searches for files and I do use it and shut indexing off.
