I believe that you have the choice of Full backup + Incremental backup, or Full backup + Differential backup.
I would like to have both.
This will be helpful at the time of recovery. You will not need to restore too many incremental backups. You will only have to restore incremental backups after the last differential.
For example, I may do a daily incremental and a monthly differential and a quarterly full. This will give you the best of both worlds, smaller backups (incremental advantage) and faster recovery (differential advantage).
But, I understand that is not possible because of the conflict with file archive attribute on the source of the backup.
The incremental backups clear the attribute so when the time comes for a differential, the differential does not have a valid knowledge of which files have changed since the last full backup.
Is there any backup software that can do this?
Edit:
http://www.febooti.com/product...ve-file-attribute.html
This link claims that new backup utilities do not use the archive attribute.
I need to do more research on this.
Do you know any free backup utility that does not need the archive attribute?
