How do you say numbers over the phone?

One of my biggest frustrations every day is people who group their numbers together. So instead of saying 4-9-0-1-0 they will say something like "four ninety ten". Its not so bad if they say it slow, but usually people who do this speak pretty fast and don't bother to enunciate.

Are you one of these people or do you take the extra 2 seconds to just say each number individually?

I don't think I am alone in not saying one eight zero zero, but other than that I will take the extra 2 seconds.

I always say each number, but for 0 sometimes I will say 'zero' and sometimes I will say 'O'.

Depends on the context of the number. If it is something like a phone number, I usually say the numbers individually. If it is a value, for example 4655 pencils, I will say "four thousand six hundred fifty five".

And make sure you enunciate. Perfect way to convey numbers and letters.

I'll usually repeat if it's a longer number or alpha/numeric.

"repeat - Alpha Tango X-ray niner fower fife one lima"
"confirmed"

As a habit I never say "repeat" on the radio. It's always "I say again".

I often have to give SIM numbers over the phone with Nextel. I will individually say each number, but group them in threes, so there is a slight pause after every third digit, making it easier for the support person to keep up.

I've never gotten the hang of saying out loud an alphanumeric code over the phone. The nouns that come to mind to go along with the letters are never appropriate... A as in ass, B as in boner, C as in wise and beautiful woman, D and in douche, etc... so I always pause and wait for the support person to come up with an appropriate noun.

I make it a point to use weird words when I do that, but I try to make it sound like I am being serious. Every once in a while I will get a military guy who will "teach" me the right way.

Little things help pass the time during the day.

You're right. "repeat" means I want you to repeat.

Generally repeat has nothing to do with speech, but more so an action. So if I say repeat and they interpret it as "bomb the shit out of that bunker again," well, I could be in trouble.

If I'm giving a string of numbers I give each digit individually, and I always say "zero" not "oh."

For things like dates I put them together when applicable, like "ten twenty-eight fifty-seven" for October 28, 1957
