Here's something that's beginning to work for me. Before you buy something or walk in to a restaurant to eat, think if you really need this or you can get a cheaper alternative. Sure your brain will kick in with all sorts of reasoning that this is it - you really need this - and after this you'll try to compensate somewhere else, but put that all aside and re-think if you really need this thing (or need to eat here). Then think again. Learn to argue with your own thoughts which have already been "accustomed" to your lifestyle.

Also, The Dancing Peacock has some great advice about immediately transferring the money to your savings the moment you receive the cash. I'm also beginning to do this, which really helps.

And try to stay away from shopping malls. They're always bad for your wallet.

don't eat out so much, don't nickel and dime yourself with lots of small purchases, etc.

You bank can xferred $xx every paycheck for you to a savings account. Out of sight out of mind, if you still think that you're going to use the money in the savings, remove access from your ATM card...or even make it a joint account w/ 2 sigs required
