Pandora?

Huh?

Online Streaming Music project.

Definitely a good way to find the newest stuff. Also, myspace and youtube are good. By the time it hits radio or tv it is already popular.

You can always check out NPR for god International Music. Then there is streaming from other countries. :)

If you're into J-pop, an episode or two of any Anime is great way to get introduced to some songs.

J-pop? *shudder*

Hey! Nothing wrong with being expose to another cultuer ;)

There's quite a few decent music in Japan that trumps most crap in the States.

There is good music in japan but I don't think any of it is j-pop, at least not what I would call j-pop.

radio, friends, etc. also my last.fm recommendations :)

Can somesome explain last.fm to me? I could never figure out what that was about.

logs all the music you play, and matches you to other people who listen to the same stuff... in an attempt for you to find other music. Altho, I think it now has a recommendation player based on your data like pandora

My wife and I subscribe to an excellent British music magazine called Uncut. Every issue includes a CD with songs by the various artists featured that month. I discover a lot of great bands that way. Obviously the focus is on the British rock scene but they feature a lot of US stuff too.

Go to lots of local shows with touring acts. Support local bands, find what local bands you like and go see them when they open for out of town acts.
Last FM. like pandora, but more extensive IMO. also requires a free download and install.
Soulseek
CMJ magazine.

Look for similar artists at allmusic, amazon, last.fm, etc. Read reviews, if something is consistently highly rated by a variety of sources and it seems like something I might like, I will check it out.

Pandora is a good concept but their catalog seems pretty limited to me. I got a lot of repetition within a day.

Find where people with similar tastes to you are discussing music, in real life or online. On the internet that could be a specific band's forums, an audiophile website, etc. I've gotten a bunch of leads on new stuff from a mailing list dedicated to a cult band from 15 years ago.
