Can someone explain to me or point me to a web site on how to remove the retail PIII heatsink and fan properly?

Thanks,

You put it on a hard flat floor and place one end of the CPU gently under your foot. Then, you put your fingers between the two big pieces of plastic that make up the black cartridge. After that, you pull really hard.

Writers note: CPU may not come out in one piece.

Check GideonTech article.

I can't find a link, but another way to remove the plastic pins or retainers is to place upside down on a flat surface one of those small case screws with a flat top from your PC case. Then place the SECC2 unit squarely on top of the screw tip, with the tip of the screw fitting into the small depression where the end of the retaining pin comes out of the cartridge. Then press down very firmly on the SECC2 unit to pop the retainer loose. This takes a lot of force and the retainers may come out in steps, rather than all at once. But it works.
