I need to clean the CPU's surface and re-apply Arctic Silver 2 (because I think I can do a better job than last time ;))

How do I remove that old Arctic Silver without damaging the CPU? I think I got some of that stuff over other components on the top of the CPU, not just the square core. What do I use to wipe it off? Help..

Thanks.

Fingernail remover or something similar, acetone in general, should work fine, there is a "thermal compound remover" kit, that you can buy, i think its a Senfu, but the fingernail remover should be fine

Get most of it off with Goo Gone and get the remaining off using rubbing alchohol. Works great, I've done it several times.

Whoa!!!

Alchohol?! Won't that dissolve the chip or some of the components?

I have a small, $3 can of "QD Electrical Cleaner" that eats ASII right off of my athlons and K6s. I have no idea what's in the darn thing but it works good. :D

LOL, alchohol dissolving computer components? Nah, it won't hurt em' at all. Hehe, isn't carb cleaner worse? I'm not sure I'd put anything on my CPU that I use to clean my engine. ;)

Acetone, toluene, both should be OK. (Note: fingernail polish remover = acetone)

As for rubbing alcohol, I'd recommend you use 91% solution, the 70% solution doesn't cut it.

Steel wool would be a BAD idea.

Goo Gone + a toothbrush works great, rinse with water & dry with a hair dryer when done.

Been doing it ever since the K6-2 days, I've washed K6-2's, Celerons, Celeron II's, P3's, Athlons, etc.

If you are making a funny comment, please put a smiley next to it so I don't actually try what you're suggesting ;)
