How do you reinstall direct x in WinME?

i went to www.microsoft.com/directx and downloaded DX7Aeng, but when i try and install i get a message saying "There already is a newer version of directx on my machine"

I cant seem to find it on the WinME cd either.

It was my impression tham ME automatically installed DX-7.

When I checked version of DirectX after installing ME, it reports version 7.1
The version that is downloadable from MS is 7.0a.
