How do you put bold in posts?

When editing "Message Text" there are symbols at the top, B, I, U, etc. But when I click on B, all I get is an interminable hourglass and I have to hit ESC. How does this work?

I can bold with the those symbols but I get the hourglass when I click the bold B in the tool bar. What can I do about my bum browser? It's just IE, latest version.

This is underlined

This is italics

Whoa! This is bold.
