How do you pronounce 'sorbet'?

Seems like most people use the French/Italian 'ay'... but sorbet is originally Turkish. I've got weird looks all my life for saying 'it', people like to correct you when they think they're right :(

I think the general consensus on it is that either is correct, but in my opinion it's much more fun to say 'it'. Also, 'ay' makes it sound too sweet.

According to Merriam Webster, either is correct. I personally say "sore-bay" and would probably look at you funny if you said "sore-bet" to me.

Dictionary.com backs you up, I've always said the sor-bay pronunciation, but you are correct!

Hmm, so I guess it's supposed to be pronounced like the 'et' in "sherbet".

Good to know.

That makes me wonder how people pronounce sherbet -- I know how it's spelled, but I've always pronounced it "sher-bert."

Maybe I should get funny looks from others.

No, I mean "sher-bet" vs. "sher-bert."
