how do you prevent stuff from getting stolen?

at my job we use our old datacenter to store a lot of company property. Equipment, new stuff that arrives from CDW, old crap and everything in between.

Lately we have had a problem with laptops growing legs and walking away. Unfortunately we buy the cheapo laptops for people and buying the IBM's with their built in security is too expensive. And a lot of people also need access to the room because there is also a lot of telecom equipment in there.

We have a camera but sometimes the motion sensor doesn't work and it didn't catch the last incident. I thought about bar coding everything or maybe even putting RFID tags on stuff and having a reader by the door automatically record stuff as it comes in and goes out.

Anyone have any ideas on a good system that we can implement to stop the theft?

Rf tags work great.

You can get systems that will not release a electronic door lock if the RF tag is not authorized.

Build a retainer cage for the computers that you are responsible for. Then pad lock it, install a camera and record. Someone has figure out your current security plan and are taking you to the bank. Wow and X-mas is around to corner...

A stretch of hallway with blades coming from all directions. Remember, a repetant man kneels before God. A leap of faith. Believe, you must believe. Then a stone tile floor with letters on it. Remember, the name of God in the old testament starts with a "Y", not a "J".

This way is cheaper than using RF tags.

It may be more inconvient for those that have the access to the cage, however, quicker in the long run.
Camera can be triggered by motion sensor if needed.

The use of RF tags however can control general access anywhere. The tags can be on equipment as well as ID badges.

Track people attempting to enter un-authorized areas and equipment leaving areas, not just the holding area.

Cable locks, what $25 bucks each? RF tags+readers+server=???

I'd also expand your camera system to 24x7, not motion sensor and/or adding a camera or two. The system in place will likely allow you to add a camera for the cost of wiring+camera.
