How do you position your Wii?

Baked

Every single ad or pic I see, the Wii's placed in the vertical position. However, one of the air vents is at the bottom of the Wii. So if you put the Wii in the vertical position, you're basically blocking the vent, which creates heat build up. Yes I know there's a hole on the stand, but it's basically a dead end once you set the stand down and put the Wii on top of it.

I put my Wii in the horizontal position for maximum airflow. Am I paranoid? The bottom felt a bit warm after an hour of Wii sports.

Mines been vertical since I got it at launch. No problems at all.

Edit: Add a poll 😛

"Positioning your Wii", "poll"......

You guys are really making this tough for me to contain my inner-Beavis.

I'm sure there is a good condom joke here somewhere, if I could only find it...

At home mine is usually in the stand. When I'm traveling I keep is horizontal.

Horizontal. I used to keep it vertical until I got a new TV stand. The shelves in the stand don't provide enough room to keep it vertical.

Vertical. There are actually vents that would be semi-blocked in EITHER position, but in both cases there are feet that elevate it slightly to allow air to flow underneath. Look at the bottom of the stand - air can flow in. I think it is important to put it on a solid surface either way though - if you just sit it on carpet there will NOT be airflow underneath no matter how you position it.

I'd like for it to be horizontal but I've never gotten it there. It's more like a 45 degree angle usually, so somewhere in between I suppose.

Vertical because it better suits the Wavebird adapters sticking out of the top that would prevent it from lying flat if positioned horizontally 😛

Both my original, and replacement Wii have been vertical in the Wii Stand.

Although I have thought about placing it horizontal. Are there really any advantages on either position for the Wii? I do worry about knocking the Wii over sometimes.

No real advantage either way. Vertical is better for the wavebird adapters like I mentioned in my first post in this thread, horizontal (with GC ports facing towards you) is probably best for when using wired GC controllers because Nintendo has always had extremely short cords...granted 3rd party controllers and/or extension cords could solve this problem, and I'd probably even recommend it...those cords really are way too short (really is another reason why the wavebirds were/are so popular)

The intended primary position is vertical, however it is quite clear the console was very well designed to work either way.

I bought a Classic Controller today because I couldn't find any official Nintendo GC controllers at retail stores. It connects to the Wii remote like the nunchuk, so it's "wireless." For $20, it's better than shelling out $60+ for a wavebird on ebay. I'm only using it for N64's Zelda and Starfox on VC, and maybe Mario Kart Wii when it comes out.

There are very little airflow going in and coming out of the Wii vents, so I don't think it really matters if you put it vertical or sideways. I prefer inserting discs in the horizontal fashion, so my Wii's in the sideways position.

Mine's horizontal and the Wavebird adapters fit just fine (it's like a few mm clearance with the surface the Wii is on, but they don't touch)? Mine used to be vertical though and I had no problems with it. Typically it is best to have optical drives in a horizontal position FWIW.

My son keeps his at a 20 degree angle or so. Hes a slob and the wii is all over the place. Never had a read issue since launch.

you're right about the adapters, I was thinking about it the wrong way...it'd have to be upside down to cause a problem 😛

'typically best' for drives not developed be vertical yes, but the Wii has always been intended to be vertical

there is no right, wrong, or best way to do it outside of situating it based on how it works best for you and your particular setup

Almost all optical drives are designed to function while either vertical or horizontal - the wii doesn't have some 'special wii designed vertically capable' drive. While this is true, I've seen many vertical optical drives fail - about as many as I've seen horizontal fail... and there about 100 times more horizontal.. Because of this, imo, it's best for them to be horizontal.

And.. like previously mentioned, when it's vertical airflow is blocked.. easier to tip over.. doesn't fit anywhere.. and finally, looks stupid. Don't follow the marketing hype... it's a typical "engineer designs product - stupid marketing dep't decides to sell it while vertical - pissed off and annoyed engineer designs some stupid base that satisfies marketing but only allows for 2mm of airflow clearance" sorta deal.

Mine is horizontal.
