How do you politely tell your neighbor (which you don't know) his wireless network is not secure? - I netsended...

How do I know this? Because I'm posting from it right now.

Updated (cause I forgot to yesterday) - I netsended twice since yesterday morning. I haven't heard from the "host" yet (phone or in person).

Keep locking him out of his router. After he resets it a dozen times he'll get the point.

leave text files on his desktop.

Or something along that lines, shouldn't be too hard.

Mind you - I'd prefer to NOT access his actual computer in any way. And locking out of the router - well, if it was setup with factory defaults I don't think he'd be wise enough to have a clue. I'm thinking a more in-person kind of thing. But how do you slip into conversation of "Oh, by the way... your wireless network...."

You sure which neighbor it is?

Not entirely certain to be honest. But I have my guesses based on a few bits of info I've gleaned (like his computer name) and the general neighborhood. The houses are far enough apart that I know it pretty much has to be either of my next door neighbors. There's too many walls and a long enough distance from my backyard neighbor to make a decent connection, and the couple across the street I doubt would know what a computer is let alone name the machine "ass-kicker". I'm leaning toward the computer of the teenage son of the family next door.

The next time you visit, strike up a conversation about the broadband service.

"Boy my connection sucks. How is yours?"
"Great."
"Even with more than one computer?"
"Yes."
"How do you share the connection?"
"Router."
"Cool. You've secured it, right?"
"No."

voila.

They wouldn't know - unless there's other computers statically assigned IP's, the DHCP client table only ever has 1 computer listed.

You said he has a teenager.

So whenever you see the teenager outside, politely tell him about it. Chances are he installed the router.

My network is not secure and frankly, I don't give a sh1t. If you want to surf on my connection I could care less...

Where do you live and how often do you make purchases online?

:( Then I can only recommend either ignoring it or only bringing it up in a "just by chance, my Windows was connected to someone else!" way. I don't know your neighbor's disposition and I'm guessing that you're not very close friends with them (I figured it you were, you'd have no problem just bringing it up), but I wouldn't risk the "I've been playing with your router and you need to secure x, y, z..." route.

Often, but if you want to go through that much effort to sit there and watch my packets by all means...you deserve it.

don't No harm, no foul

(Lets say you were bangng his daughter, would you go up to him and ask if he has a daughter? On top of that ask him if she was a virgin? When you both say farewell, you politely tell him, she's not as safe as he thinks she is  )
