so, I bought my first record player, tossed on a record, but now I can't get it to play. the arm just slides across the record until reaching the center and then resets

problem: I drop the arm on the record. rather than playing the record, the arm slides straight to the center, producing a large amount of random noise, and then resets itself back on the base.

So it is scratching along the record rather than playing across it?

You need to adjust the tracking force so that it applies the appropriate pressure on the needle. There's probably a counterweight on the back end of the tonearm that you can adjust by rotating it.

Is this thread a joke? I figured out how to work a record player when I was..maybe 5 years old.

sound like it's an automatic record player. i had a crappy one that would do that. it just got screwed and thought it was done with the record when i tried to play one. so the needle would just return to the holding bracket. annoying.

try moving the arm all the way to the center 'til you hear a click then move it to the beginning of the record. that's how i had to ghetto-rig mine.

Adjust the tracking force. Should be about 5 grams IIRC. I've not had to mess with the tracking on my turntable in a long time. With a brand new Pickering needle and cartridge I remember setting it to 4.5 grams.

so how do you fix that? :)

There should be a counterweight on the end of the arm that you can adjust so that the needle doesn't skate across the record. Just screw it so that it moves more towards the needle. Don't overdo it though.

Edit-If it's too heavy it will wear into your records. Obviously, it is way too light now though.

Adjust the tonearm weight heavier, make sure that if there is an 'anti-skate' option that it is set to zero, make sure the needle exists.
