When I open it with out admin, it doesn't do anything.... just exits. With admin works fine, but I don't want my little brother to have admin.

Edit: oh, this is XP pro

You can set a certain EXE file/shortcut to run as another user, so you can set it to run the EXE file with your admin account, but he'll still have his limited user account for everything else :)

Yea, I know about runas, but he still gets the password to an admin account which is just as bad. You don't know my little brother.

I've got the same problem with MusicMatchJukebox. It won't run as anything but Admin. :| If you find a solution to your problem, let me know. It might help me with mine. :(

had to do alot of this kind of stuff at work, try giving his account rights to edit those folders.... We also have a secondary security program so it's a bit easier for us. Some things may not work no matter what you do. What do you want to stop him from doing on the computer?

yea, I've already given full permissions to the installation directory. It must be doing something with the registry (I'm guessing).

Oh, and basically don't want him to be able to do anything but run his programs and games.... that boy has a knack for screwing up his computer and I'm tired of re-installing it.

Hmm..... Ok I monitored file and registry access when I started up Counterstrike and this was the only error I saw:

264 3.40872820 cstrike.exe:1396 OpenKey HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\Winmm ACCDENIED Access: 0xF003F DOMAIN\User

After this, cstrike.exe is no longer listed in the log. Now I would think I could just change the permissions for this registry key. Gonna try it and see what happens but does anyone know anything about this key?

Ok, I figured it out. It's these 2 registry keys that are the problem:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\Winmm
HKLM\Software\Aureal

You just have to set full permission to those for the user and it works. (in case anyone else needs to know)

Thanks man! Good info. I'm assuming the last key is the soundcard you're using. So for other people the key may look like this:

HKLM\Software\Creative

For Creative sound cards.

Ok, obviously Aureal doesn't refer to the soundcard. I tried the Creative entry and it didn't work. Gave full control to the Aureal entry and everything runs perfect. Thanks man! Good work. ;)

The programs are called Filemon and Regmon (go figure ;) ). I think you can just do a search at download.com and find the company's website. Plus it's free! (or a free version anyway)

Although, I just found out my little brother is still having problems. I guess it works ok if he picks software for his 3D mode, but he can't use Direct 3D or OpenGL. I'll have to do some more monitoring and see what it's doing. That will be tomorrow night tho as I have to get to bed.

Edit: btw, you still have my all time favorite nick, LOL - Every time I see it I think of, "You know what Jack Burton always says..."

Ah, ya, I use those programs too but they are a bitch to use because they scroll so fast. I'll see if I can come up with anything over here to solve the mysterious "Counter-Strike user account" puzzle. :)

Ya, I love that movie. :)

Well, I guess I was wrong. It's working fine with those registry permissions above. I guess the internet or the servers he was connecting to was acting up.
