How do you play a DVD movie on XP?

This is for a friend?s system.
Are there any good free DVD player programs to download?

I have downloaded a couple so far and they are full of spy ware so I had to delete them and scan my system.

The only one I found that works is AVS DVD player but the playback is slow and choppy.

The system

Athlon 1.34 GHz
1 G RAM
FX5200, 128 M RAM
Recent DVD burner

Should I expect a smooth DVD frame rate with this system?

Any recommendations on free or inexpensive DVD playback would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

PS:
My own system plays DVDs flawlessly with 1% CPU usage but it is brand new:
Vista Home Premium, 32 Bits
E8400
Asus Maximus Formula
2 G RAM OCZ Reaper
ATI 3650 with 500 M RAM
42 In Plasma TV for playing DVD via HDMI from the PC
19 In LCD
It rocks!!!!!!!!!

Legally you don't, codecs for things like MPEG2 and AC3 require licenses in order to be used so when you buy a product like PowerDVD that's part of the price. If you use something like VLC then it's your responsibility to properly license the codecs, they even mention that in their FAQ.

One possibility: if the DVD burner came with a software suite, it probably includes a licensed DVD codec with its player. Nero, Roxio, whatever. Take a look.

I wonder why AVS uses so many CPU cycles? Anything malicious or just badly optimised software?

Anyway, thanks again.

or gomplayer.
timestretching is nice in other videos/mp3s.
doesn't work on dvd though sadly,...gotta use pay softwar efor that

Or find an OEM copy of PowerDVD (5 or 6). Once installed WMP will use the codec and is able to play DVDs just fine.

Latest VLC player build lags with DVDs on my system. I'm running Vista 32bit Ultimate... 3GB ram Core2Duo 2GHz....

does anyone have a fix?

Vista Ultimate includes a DVD codec stock (and so does Home Premium, IIRC), so you really don't need VLC player. Is your DVD playback OK in Windows Media Player?
