Hello Gang,
I have been trying to fly planes in BF1942, using the keyboard, and failing at it.

How do you pilot the planes in this game?

Get a joystick with a throttle and twist, I have a thrustmaster that cost me $25 at Gamestop. Set the Z-axis(twist) to the roll. A big trick to dog fighting is to cut the throttle back in a turn, if you have enough altitude you can go back to almost 100% reverse and practicly turn in place. I found the keyboard and mouse way to sensitive to mess with also. Some mouse pilots may be able to give you better feedback if you don't own or want to buy a stick.

i fly with keyboard only. im not fantastic, but i can get around in the helis and capture flags. really, all it takes is practice. start up a coop game and blast away. for vanilla bf, i like to use midway because planes are not that hard to come by, and bots in landing craft are good practice. practice bombing ships too. for DC, i have been using tobruk to practice the heli.

in vanilla bf, i use the a and d keys to turn left and right for not very sharp turns. when you turn left and right, you have to use arrow left and right to counter the roll. if you want to make a sharp turn, roll one way and "pull up." and you just have to get used to aiming your entire plane at a target.

ok, enough rambling by me.

you think this is hard... try choppers in desertcombat. takes a while to get used to, but it totally doable (yes, planes too)

lots of practice on local server is the only thing i can recommend. you'll get used to it, but then again trying to fight all the other plane campers in the pub sucks... <www.21stcenturywarfare.net plug here>

Keyboard and mouse here, couldn't use a joystick when you use keyboard and mouse for most of the gameplay anyway, and as in previous post try flying the choppers in DC, you could never fly them with a joystick, took me ages to get the hang of them but now have mastered them...great fun!!

I feel that the maps are too small with the planes being so fast in some cases. You barely get off the ground and your deserting.

Anyway, I just started my own LAN games and practiced bombing etc with all the planes for a couple of hours now I am pretty good and I just use the keyboard.

Just practice.
If you are using kb and mouse, use the default controls, but turn both the keyboard and mouse sensitivity all the way up on the air controls tab.

After a couple of hours of practicing, I was able to fly around pretty well with kb and mouse.
After a couple of weeks of playing, I got to be very very good at bombing. I could get a direct hit on a moving tank at least 50% of the time.
After flying with kb and mouse for months, I got tired of getting totally owned in dogfights so I bought a Saitek Cyborg Gold joystick.

I definitely prefer the stick. It is much much better for dogfighting. But it does take more practice to perfect your bombing aim with the stick.
If you get a stick, don't set the twist to roll as someone mentioned above. You want the x-axis to be your roll and the twist to be your rudders.

All in all it just takes practice.

Winchester,
I assume you are talking about DC.
Otherwise, I don't know what you mean about the planes being too fast for the maps.
In DC this is true on some of the smaller maps, but the bigger maps are perfect for DC. Gazala, El Alamein, Midway, Wake.
