How do you pick email usernames?

For business, I understand the need to use your real name in an email address:

First.Last@emailaddress.com

But what about personal email? Do you use your real name? Why or why not? Privacy issues for not using your real name?

I'm about to open a Gmail account and want to get this right. My first.lastname is available....but do I really want my full name as my Gmail account?

I'm stumped as to what else to use...it has to be a minimum of 6 letters or numbers. First initial and last name isn't six letters eitiher...I don't really have a nickname I go by....I'm just stumped and I want to get it right the first time obviously...

I'm wracking my brain on cool names, but am coming up empty...ugh.

EDIT: I also don't want to use "mangled" I was stumped when I created this account too and wish I could change it...

I just ended up using my name...when the service opens up, I can always choose something else on a new account if I want...this way, I got my name already.

Usually just my first name @ whatever but if that's take, which it usually is, I just add one letter of my last name.
