How do you know what brand of battery to get, etc?

Battery died today, CAA recommends to go to some place called "Battery Man" (with no website) and they sell my mom and install a battery called "Pow-R-Surge 7000". There is no website for this battery so I don't know anything about it. Looking at some websites it looks like it's made by a company called EAST PENN.

I can't help but feel like I my mom got ripped off when she took my car in for a new battery since I don't know anything about it.

Has anyone heard of this kind of battery before?

Walmart, they are everywhere which makes it easy to warranty it out if something goes wrong.

Make sure the electrical specs are somewhat close. IMHO just get the house brand at one of the major autoparts stores. The model number on the battery usually works across brands too. At least mine did.

Costco or Wal-Mart

They have application books which tell you which model to get. All have pretty much the same warranty as well.

consumer reports. they just rated batteries again a few months ago. go to thelibrary or pay to access the website. the t hing is there is no easy pattern to follow, the consumer is pretty much flying blind without tests like consumer reports. if you look at their top 10 for each battery size the best ones are always different brands:p its crazy

Gotta make sure that whatever battery you get has at least the minimum CCA's (cold-cranking amps) that are recommended for your car. If you have lots of electrical goodies that add a heavy draw, or live in COLD country, you hsould get one that is rated much more than standard. Not sure what's available in Canuck-land for brands however.
Optima is a good battery, Sears DieHard is a decent (but IMO overpriced ) brand, and Interstate is generally excellent. If you have a Wal-mart (gag) in your area, their batteries are decent as well.
You can usually tell how good the battery is by the length of the warranty. (not always, but it's usually a good indicator)
MOST good quality batteries will have at least 72 months warranty, and many will have 84.
