I always wondered if they feel stupid for weaving through traffic, and then seeing the cars they passed right behind them at the light.

I know that, but I do it for fun. :)

i agree. my heart races whenever i'm at 78 mph... and it's definitely not because of the adrenaline rush of speeding. it's the fear of getting slammed with a $150 speeding ticket.

meh, I drive 150 miles to work round trip. I reset the computer each time. I deal with very little traffic. For the gearing of my car, there isn't much difference between 65 and 100.

65 is too low for 6th, 100 is just right for 6th. Either way, the difference in MY car with my commute is negligble.

First hand experinence vs. the intarweb for the freakin win.

Safety issues aside, the logistics in the long run will not add up. It's just outside of the engineering design. Cars were just not made to do those kinds of speeds on a long term basis. There are a few that can but I'm betting yours is not one of them.

i drive 80 MPH every chance i get. i once AVERAGED 82 MPH on a 400-mile trip, including stopping for gas and getting caught in a giant traffic jam.

see sig for my car and mileage. oh yeah, i got 26 MPG on that 400-mile blaster. EPA highway for my car: 27 MPG.

i averaged about 75-78 on my non-stop trip from st. louis to washington and i averaged 33 mpg. epa highway for my car is 28. i guess cruise control really helps out with gas mileage.

It's easy enough for me to go say 85mph and there's still going to be a lot of people going faster. I don't feel too much risk, because I would hope the police will go after the worst offenders.

Ditto.

Ive lived in San Diego my entire life. I know of certain parts on the local freeways where I know there is a low probability a CHP will be there.

Although I don't advise to not worry about it, my buddy was pulled over going 105mph and got a warning.

Depends on the cop. What I REALLY REALLY HATE is when dumbfvcks slow down to 65mph or less when a local cop gets on the freeway. Idiots

Doing 75-80 on local?

I was doing 75-80 on the freeway, just after leaving work. I usually drive around that speed and there are always people going faster than me. When I got my ticket on the surface streets I think I was doing 53 in a 40. It sucks though, because that particular road is real long and straight and there is hardly any traffic, so it's hard not to speed.
"surface streets" ? do your highways not have surfaces?

Local PD has better things to do. If you're driving all crazy weaving in and out going 80mph they might put a stop to it. Everyone is so pussy to pass them though. I always slow down to about 75mph when I see local PD.

CHP? That is a completely different story. If a CHP is on the road, my ass is going 65-70mph tops. Especially if its a biker CHP, those guys are dicks.

i do it because i really don't care if i get a speeding ticket. the pd is starting to put speeding camera on the freeways but they are still set to about 10+mph over the speed limit. many times on freeways where there aren't many cars the traffic will be going 90+ and the cop will be doing more. as long as you aren't an ass, at least in my neck of the woods, the cops really don't care. if i get pulled over i will pay it, no biggie.

when i was a young lad - 16 i got pulled over for racing and doing ~110 in a 45, got off with a warning. it was late - about 2:30AM and there was noboby out. damn, those cop motorcycles can sure catch up to you in a hurry :)

to be honest the warning did more to slow me down than a ticket would have anyway. he was a cool cop, but had he been a d!ck i and given me a ticket and/or impounded my vehicle i would have been one of the "i hate cops" kind of kid.

If they started arresting speeders on the spot, take their car to the steel mill for bessemer processing (all in front of them) perhaps they would slow down.

Sending the car to a steel mill would be worse for the environment than driving it at 120mph for years . . . .

And it'd be stupid. Speed limits shouldn't be wildly broken, but honestly, it's not a big deal.

If they had a way to directly quantify dangerous driving and nail those people, I wouldn't argue, but not all the terrible drivers on the road are going fast.

Not in Houston.... average speed in no traffic seems to be well over 80...

so 100 mph isnt to much faster... and cops wont take ya to jail for it.. just hit ya with a big ass ticket..

I cruise on the highways usally in the 80-90 mph range. thats keeping up with traffic for the most part.

same thing with people that arrange to meet dates online. it's just a matter of preference.

LOL at you guys.

First it goes from 100 to 80 then to stop and go. You must be a riot in front of the bench in court.

Processing a car ? dumping into a crucible. Even if they did with a full tank of gas the release of bad things into the air certainly would not be as harmful as "driving at 120 mph for years". :p Anyways, I said that to be funny. Dropping a wrecking ball square into the middle of the roof would be better, no? Or how about that hydraulic powered machine that removes stumps and does general demolition. Someone posted a link to a clip of it "buzzing" a mini van in mere minutes. That was

Speed limits are there for a reason. Several reasons actually. Tickets generate revenue. Safety - speed kills. If you want to drive at triple digit speeds for heaven's sake go to a track.

Boys and their cars.

Don't be fooled.

lol like I'm gonna listen to ANYTHING that has a .gov on it...
they are so set in thier little Agendas they will post the sky is purple if one of thier backers said to post it..

good source lol...
and yes Modern performance cars do not eat anymore gas running at 90-100 over 55.. overdrive and fuel injection evens it out.
now running wide open... with your foot ont he floor.. or jackrabbit starts yes your fuel economy will plummet.

funny over half the speeders I see are women... so dont even play the gender card..
I know plenty of women that have thier mustangs and corvettes and BMWs that haul ass around town everywhere they go..

speed doesnt kill btw.. lack of driver training kills.. and giving anyone a license that can parallel park and finish a 10 question test kills..
if you look at europe and thier high speed highways and thier stringent license programs youll see that they have less accidents at higher speeds... becasue it takes a real driver to get a license there instead of the good old US and our cracker jack prize licenses..

It also really really helps to have a car with suspension designed for it. I may be a speed nut, but there are a lot of cars I'd NEVER go above 70 in because I don't feel that I'd be able to get the car to do twich reactions to road dangers...

Speeding doesn't kill, Wreckless driving kills.

I don't speed to get where I'm going faster, I speed because I enjoy actually feeling like I am moving and not crawling. It is the sense of motion that ultimately decides my speed (my windows are always open during the warmer months -- no ac).

I drive to work and back everyday on 95 near Baltimore, going at least 80mph. I easily reach 90-100 sometimes. In Columbia, on roads like 175, I usually go around 70.

Speeding itself isn't a problem, the problem comes up when there is a large gap between the different speeds of the different cars while on the freeway at the same time.

Guy going 100 when everyone else is going 75 is just as dangerous as someone going 45 when everyone is going 75.

EXACTLY!!!! here:

Say you have 100 miles to cover on the highway. The lefthand column is average speed, the right hand is the time it would take to get there. There's barely a half hour for going 30 mph over hte limit, and when you consider the risks to safety and as far as getting pulled over go, it's CLEARLY not worth it.

60 1 hour 36
70 1 hour 24
80 1 hour 15
90 1 hour 6
100 1 hour

and this is for 100 miles, how many of you commute 100 miles each way to work?

I'd share, but the last thing we need are overconfident dickbags going excessively fast. It's one thing when you're doing 100 on an empty freeway. It's QUITE ANOTHER when two riced out BMWs pass you on the right while you're doing that. This happened to me Tuesday night.

I don't, but I'm often involved in 150+ mile trips to the airport late at night.
