Straight up I need a good guide to partitioning my hard drive. I would appreciate it a lot if someone could direct me to a good site.

Also after you load windows is it too late to partition your hard drive?

One more thing. I made a win me boot floppy and when I put it in the PC says failed to read cd-rom. how do you get it to read your boot floppy?

Thanks guys

Use FDISK program that comes with Dos/Windows..

Search in Google.com for "partitioning hard drive" - no one can give you better links than google.

P.S. Fdisk program has a pretty good interface, just try using it.
Also, try Partition Magic, it's complex but has great features.

Fdisk (provided with windows) will partition your drive but you will loose all date on the drive. Software like Partition Magic will partition you drive without loosing data.

Basically you make a Primary Dos partition and an extended dos partition. The Primary DOs partition will usually be assigned drive letter "C" In the extended dos partition you can create as many logical drives as you want.

If using FDISK, remember to make the Primary DOs partition active, as that is the partition what will have the os and will boot it up.

Hope this helps a bit.

but how do I access the fdisk setup?

I have a win boot floppy and a win 98 cd. But when the computer turns on it only reads the cd. How do I get the floppy to work? Or can I access the fdisk program during the win 98 setup or with the cd some how?

Thanks again.

I don't understand, do you already have a working computer? If so, you should be able to type "fdisk" at the command-line prompt.

Are you making these posts from that computer? Then do what we told you..
Download Partition Magic (see above), and install it.

Fdisk is not and does not have a "setup", it's a program that comes with Windows.
It may or may not be on the Windows Installation CD.

Make a boot disk from your other PC, and use that - it will have fDisk on it.

If it doesnt read the floppy at start up, you need to go into your BIOS by pressing Delete on start up and set it so that it looks for a floppy disk when you start up.

The easiet way is to get the programs from hard drives manufacturers' web site. I used Maxblast from Maxtor, which is very intuitive and does the job.
You can get this type of program from Wester Digital too.
The maxtor program is much faster than fdisk, but you need Windows StartUp diskette to complete the partition and format.
