It just takes depth perception....

But you really shouldn't be parking ON the sidewalk!

When I was learning my instructor put the car aligned perfectly with the kerb and then stuck a piece of blu-tac on the windscreen where the line of the kerb went. I then got used to lining the car up with this and eventually just got the hang of positioning the car right without it.

geez you have a lot of issues with driving don't you....first the freeway merging and now this

anyways, BMW's have a feature where the sideview mirror turns downward when you go into reverse :)

Judging by how people tend to park, I think the more important question is, how do you park perfectly on the sidewalk without hitting the cars? It seems the rule of thumb in most driver's heads right now is, back up until you hear the crunch.

If you are talking about parallel parking (backing in). Heres what you do.

Pull up to the car ahead of the spot and about a foot away from that car. Line up your mirror with his.

Start backing up, while turning the wheel. Try to get the car to about a 45 degree angle with the spot and your car mirror lined up with his back bumper. Straighten the wheel

Back up straight until your front bumper is lined up with his back bumper. Turn the wheel hard so that your front end swings into the spot.

Correct if needed.

Pull up next to the car you will park behind, your steering wheel even with theirs. Then cut your wheel hard and back up, then before you hit the curb w/ your rear wheel cut the other way (still backing).
Takes practice.

practise

I practised in my ls400 @ 10pm in front of my house. I put two trashcans to simulate other cars. Well, first try, I had the trashcans FAR apart...I mean, literally, I could've just went in from the front and parked it...but soon enough, I got the trashcans close enough it was almost a perfect fit for the car

BTW: I had many strangers looking at me. There was a party in the neighborhood and the guests, after the party, drove around to view all the nice custom homes. They were all driving S600, CL600, 750's, Ferrari's etc...

I do believe some1 did call the neighborhood security because the car did a pass on me (of course he knew who I was) :)

Also, when their is traffic coming, you will naturally parallel park. I was on wilshire blvd trying find a spot. I found it, and then the the light turned from red to green. I was like "damn, boom, put in R, then F" I was in with no fender-bender :)

I just drive over to about a foot from the curb or edge of the road and stop. Easy as can be.

I dont mean to be offensive, but did you take driving school? The issues you have had with driving were all covered in my driving school, and werent a problem afterwards.

driving school doesn't teach you anymore and the driving test (in CA) doesn't require you to do parallel parking

You can park perfectly parallel to the curb if you just turn your car off in the middle of the street, and leave it there. Although, you might get a few hundred $ worth of tickets ;)
