How do you organize your MP3s?

I think it's time for me to organize my MP3s...They're all stuck in random titled folders right now, and they're getting really cluttered. I'm sure I have triples and quadruples now. I'm gonna get software to take care of the duplicates, but I don't know how I'm gonna be organizing them yet.

How do you do it? By genre or artist?

How do you??

Typically, by decade (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s) and some genres (Jazz, Blues, Classical) and U2 has its own folder ;)

Hmmmm that sounds good. I've never used the playlists, just drag in whatever I want to listen to. I'll definitely give that a shot.

one big folder. artist - song title. 1 playlist ('j' in winamp is my friend)

for albums, each has its own seperate folder and its own playlist for that album.

I stopped getting singles a few years ago... my library consists of full albums and the organization goes like this:

Genre --> Artist (Last name first) --> Album --> Tracks plus cover art

Works well for me! I just wish there were some cool solution to cross-reference within genres.

I don't have any singles, just albums so they are all in the MP3 folder labeled in sub folders as Artist - Title. It works pretty well for me, I only have around 20,000 or so loaded right now. Most the stuff I don't listen to as frequently is backed up on disc.

Edit: The tracks themselves are labeled Aritist - Track # - Title. I encode them all in 192k True Stereo with LAME.

D:\MP3s\Albums\Artist Name\Artist-Album Name\## - Artist Name - Song Title.mp3

example

a fall farewell - lost in dreams of you

D:\MP3s\Albums\A Fall Farewell\A Fall Farewell - The Impermanence Of Beauty\04 - A Fall Farewell - Lost In Dreams Of You.mp3

Well, actually, IF I were one to pirate music in the form of mp3's, that would be how I would arrange them. However I would also have a folder lableled "complete cd's" which had individual folders within it with full CD's (ie Charlies Angels Coundtrack, Norah Jones, etc)

H:\Music\MP3\$Artist\$Album\$TrackNo - $Title.mp3

Or for non-album releases or whatever, I have
H:\Music\MP3\$Artist\Misc\$Title.mp3

And a similar convention for songs of unknown artist (Which gets interesting - H:\Music\MP3\Unknown Artist\Unknown Track\$RandInt.mp3)

I've got 6 folders, I think, #-C, D-G, etc. Inside each folder, I've got folders for full albums with the year (Master of Puppets by Metallica is Metallica -1986 - Master Of Puppets) with songs labeled like Metallica - 01 - Battery.mp3. Songs that are not part of albums are just in the #-C or whatever folder with artist and title. And yes, all those Metallica mp3s are ripped by me from my CDs. Heh.

its quite ignorant of u to just assume i pirated those mp3s. yes i have downloaded mp3s but i have not pirated any. i listen mostly to trance and most of the djs who make those mixes give them away for free to get more publicity. either that or i have ripped them onto mp3 from cds that collected b4. a lot more convenient having it in all in one folder rather than different cds.

i download mostly singles... so its just by chronological order. i have a folder music1. then music2. music3. when the playlist gets too large (160 songs?) or just whenver i feel like it, ill start a new one. *shrug*

also its interesting to see what phases of music i go through :D its a STORY.

I place all of the mp3s in the "My Music" folder since it is convenient. Then, if I have a whole album, I organize them in a separate folders "Artist - Album Title" (EXAMPLE: Blue Man Group - The Complex). I name each song "Song Number. Song Title.mp3" (01. Above.mp3). Lastly, I make a *.m3u playlist for each album.

I also have one big folder called "Other" that I place all my random songs. I name them as follows:

Artist - Song Title.mp3 (Eric Clapton - My Father's Eyes.mp3)

cds I've ripped are put into folders titled 'artist name - cd name.' other songs are put into an 'other' folder. if I have lots of songs by a particular artist I'll give them their own folder. like so:

music
> cds
> > artist name - cd name
> other
> > artist name

By extension name...

Example: I have a *.MP3 folder..... and..... well..... that's it.
