How do you open the $#&! Vista Box?

Ok, I finally figured it out after half an hour lol. Pull the red tab and it pivots on a hinge on the bottom!

Are you serious? A half an hour!?

What is your thought process on this?

Step 1. Try to open like DVD cases.
Result 1. It doesn't work.

Step 2. It must be the security tape.
Result 2. Cut off all tape.

Step 3. Still won't open, so it must be another piece of tape I missed.
Result 3. Look for more tape to no avail.

Step 4. Try harder to open the case DVD style.
Result 4. Get super pissed and post on forum.

Somewhere around Step 2, I looked at the box, saw a hinge at the bottom and a RED tab up top. Therefore, my Step 3 was: Profit.

Step 1: cut the plastic tape
Step 2: pull the box this way and that
Step 3: try to unscrew bottom hinge
Step 4: google it, find vague instructions from a guy who called MS tech support and found no one there who knew how to do it, still stymied
Step 5: admit to mental deficiency, post at Anandtech
Step 6: await ridicule 🙂

There should be a fairly large sticker on the box that has a picture of how the box works. I've heard of a lot of people having issues with the box, and I just don't get it. I guess people can't read?

Any reason Microsoft went all out to be 'unique' on this process? Whatever happened to having a real cardboard box to enclose the manual and discs anyways?! Have most/all companies put that method the way of the do-do bird?

I suppose on the release of Vienna, they will require you to tap the box on the back twice, once on the top, and then dance a jig before the case will open with a battery-powered hinge. 😀

Walk to the kitchen..
Pick up biggest butcher knife..
Proceed to hack until the stubborn dvd case opens:shocked:

Followed by a call to Microsoft explaining why and how you cut your DVD in half, but your product key is still legible!

I like that! No ridicule from me😉

As long as it has the same dimensions to line up nicely with the rest of the DVD cases on my shelf, I don't care how the stupid case opens. I hated those funky Simpson head cases; they made my shelf look so... non-linear.

LOL! I have to admit, the box had me scratching my head as well until I figured it out. I wonder how many people have said "F- it" and just cracked it open it with a hammer 😀

First time I took a look at the new box was with Office 2007. I looked at it and started trying to pry it open... I didn't see the hinge on the bottom.

I finally started prying it open with a knife until a buddy of mine saw me with my struggle and came over to save me 😛.

I wonder if the new box design was on the list of the families "wants in an OS" that Microsoft interviewed haha.
