How do you open ports?

Ok, i need to open several ports to use my computer as a server in Far Cry. I have no clue how 🙂 I have Windows 2000 pro... Thanks a lot.
BTW i searched google and found nothing for my ques. I only found how to close open ports to keep out hackers.

O ya i have a Westell 2200 w/ Verizon DSL. I use DSL on only 1 computer / no router
 
By definition your ports are open if you do not have a router/firewall or firewall software. You say you do no have a router, so the only thing that may be preventing people from opening the ports is a software firewall. If you have one then check the documentation on how to open the ports.
