How Do You Open Ports?

BranzLS

Senior member
I am confused about how to open more ports to increase my download speed. I have a D-Link wireless router, so if that has a firewall, which I believe it does, then I need to open ports to make my speeds faster. I read this page http://btfaq.com/serve/cache/25.html as posted above, but I could not do what it said. I have 3 connections listed:

Internet Connection
Local Area Connection
1394 Connection

The bottom 2 do not let me access SETTINGS and the top one is not the right one anyways. What do I do? Can someone explain to me how top open ports morecimply so I can download faster? Thanks

You'll need to point your web browser at your router, default IP for d-link router should be 192.168.0.1, and configure it to forward ports 6881-6889 TCP to the private IP of the computer you wish to use bittorrent. I think D-Link calls port forwarding virtual server, so look for that in the tools or advanced.

That's the right address except it is saying my password is wrong... this could be another fun problem

Alright thanks FishTaco I thought I had set a password up but I was wrong... onto opening ports. I see where it says VIRTUAL SERVER.

I select ENABLED at the top..

Then the top box says name so I can call that whatever I want, correct?

The the private IP box, I know I put my IP there but what is it? 192.168.0.1?

What do I pick for protocol type? TCP, UDP, or BOTH?

The it says "Private Port" where I enter 6881-6889

The it says "Public Port", do I leave that empty?

Lastly for "Schedule" I select ALWAYS obviously..

The I hit APPLY and make sure I do it for all the port between 6881-6889

Is that it to make it work with Azureus?

Sorry Virtual Server doesn't have port ranges, my mistake. You want to click firewall.

You don't mention whether you have only one PC on the network. If you do it'll likely have the same IP address all the time. So on the computer where you want to run bt, from a command prompt type ipconfig, look at the IP address, that's the IP address you want to enter below. If you have more than one computer, set up DHCP to give this computer the same IP address every time. See Static DHCP from the DHCP button on the Home tab of the router.

Firewall entry for BT
Name: whatever
Action: allow
Source: WAN, blank, blank
Destination: LAN. "IP of your PC", blank, TCP, 6881, 6889
Schedule: Always

Click Apply, and you should see your new firewall entry in the list at the bottom of the page.

It is wireless. The computer I want to open the ports on is connected to the router through a cable while the other 2 are wireless. Does this mean I can use te ip found the way you specified?

Ok, tell me the specific model of D-Link wireless router that you have.

You can find the ip of the bittorrent computer the way I described, but you'll need to set the router to give it the same IP address every time. Since you have 3 computers that ask for IP addresses, its possible the way its setup by default for it to get a different IP address every time you turn it on.

3rd one under Virtual Server is Firewall.

Edit: added link showing where Firewall is located.

oh? you might need to put an * instead of leaving that first blank blank.

EDIT: Oh, Static DHCP. Click the home tab on the router page, then click DHCP on the left. Static DHCP, click enable. DHCP Client is a drop down list of connected computers, pick your wired computer and click clone, then apply. That way your router will give the wired computer the same IP address everytime.

Alright I made the ports open under firewall... now as for static dchp there is no thing to click to enable it.

I have the DI-624 router fyi

And another thing. I accidentyle deleted this entry:

Virtual Server HTTPS 0.0.0.0 TCP 443/443 always

It is under VIRTUAL SERVER

How do I make it come back?

Thanks so much for all your help

it's above the box where you enter the name.

Don't worry about the deleted Virtual Server entry, it was just an example entry.

Also I forgot to mention, click enable on your firewall rule.

On the firewall page, look at your entry in the list, on the left should be a check mark. If not, click the edit icon on the right of the entry and then your entry will show up in the boxes above. Click enable and then apply. Enable is above the box where you entered the Name.

Ok, that's enough help for you tonight, if you have more problems and no one else helps you, I'll look tomorrow.

I don't think opening up ports is going to speed up your internet connection. Opening ports just exposes your computer to the internet on those ports (normally used for servers), but it will have no affect on speed.

Actually sharq, bittorrent does need some ports opened.

BranzLS, read the above article, use one of the clients they mention which are able to tell if you properly opened the ports. If your bt client shows that the ports aren't open properly, go back to your router and make sure your firewall rule is properly setup and enabled. Then make sure the DHCP server is giving your wired computer the IP address that you entered in the firewall rule.

jbritt1234, if you look at the link in BranzLS's first post, you'll see its a link to bittorrent faq. So BranzLS is trying to increase his bittorrent download speed, not his HTTP download speed as the RFC you quoted refers. Since he's talking about bittorrent, and if you look at the link I posted for BranzLS, you'll see that bittorrent does need a port opened to increase download speed because of it's upload credit system. Admittedly this thread is very long and you probably didn't read the whole thing. 🙂

You got me there... I did read his post (which sounded like what I was talking about) but his link explained it further, and I did NOT read it... Maybe Sharq did the same thing... ????

Sorry.... 🙁
