How do you open envelopes?

If it's from a business or something, I go from the flap..if it's personal and likely to be licked, I go from the side.

I don't open my own mail, I have my dog do it in case there's any anthrax. he's expendable.

Usually the flap with my pocket knife.

I used to rip the edge, but got too many inserts that were exactly the same width as the envelope.

I run my finger under the flap and rip straight to the top of the envelope. Then I stick my finger into the recently made hole and pull down the length of the top of the envelope. This leaves the flap still glued in place and the top of the envelope opened.

I have a RTG powered (15 kilocuries of plutonium-238) 808nM pump (125W CW!) with a custom collimator sitting on my desk. We CNC machined a nice rip fence specifically for envelopes. It can open over 5,000 letters per hour. $600,000 taxpayer extended warranty still in affect.
