How do you obtain Press/Media credentials???

I'm starting a website and i need information that you can only get if you're part of the press or media. How do you go about obtaining press credentials? How does a new startup company get credentials? I'm thinking about being slim-shady about it and just lie but.. i don't even know where to begin to lie! hehe.. someone inform me on how it's done properly please.
 
It's been a while since I needed it, but when I applied to get news releases, interviews and access to the Borders News Group, I had to supply the name of my employer/paper/media organization and a short essay outlining what I would do with the information and access they gave me and a couple sentences about why I thought they should let me in.

Most of the other news stuff I did never required "credentials," but for special events and stuff, you just ask the PR people of the particular company for it. They'll probably ask the same things that the Borders Group asked me and depending on what it is you're trying to get access to, they might ask for links/copies of your work.
