How do you name your computers?

For the longest time i've named my computers after what processor they use. I've come to realise this is boring and nerdy, so whos got a great naming scheme for their PCs?

When I helped set up a network at my highschool a few years ago I named all the servers after a fruit, and the routers after planets. I might stick with the fruit idea for my newer network.

Processors.

Boring ? If you say so. I know where my print job winds up at least, instead of wondering where Zeus or Apollo are located. Every time someone gets a fancy naming idea, they are the only ones that know the names of each PC, so if you have other users (spouse, kids) they don't know a damn thing about your non-nerdy naming conventions.

Back in high school all the computers in the comp arch lab were named after transformers.

Motherboard model.

That way if I ever have to work on it again I don't even have to open it back up to find out what's inside (and if CPU-z isn't easily available for some reason).

At home, Nintendo villians. My server is Motherbrain, my laptop is Andross. I've had Ganondorf, Bowser.

We bought a pair of shiny new widescreen laptops at work which ended up called Mary Kate and Ashley 😛

I usually name them after the case theme. smoke (smoke gray), dragon (red and has dragonhead fan guards), bling (has all the fancy lighting from when I had the lighting bug), oldiron (old skool plain case for my server). laptops are names after their brand and model.

I don't have names for my work computers. But the ones at home I wasn't too creative with. The XP professional computer is named Monster because it's a Full tower(Antec) Thing is huge. It also growled and sounded like a jet plane due to a faulty case fan. That issue has since been resolved so now it purrs quietly again. Hmmm perhaps I need to rename it now. 😛

My main computer that i built a year ago is called Monster 2 because it is also a full tower case.

My next one, I'll probably redo the naming scheme to something completely different.

currently the names are the hills of Rome. since there are fewer than 7 computers on the network, that works. (and even if there were more, I could extend it beyond the traditional 7 to some of the other surrounding hills). router is palatine, server is capitoline, desktop is aventine, wife's laptop is caelian. network name is "rome" of course.

Whatever I think of in that particular moment. I've had Zoe, tux, dad, shuttle, lappy...A few others that aren't immediately coming to mind.

your spouse and kids know what kind of processor you have in each computer?

lucky man 😀

I bought most of my new computer's components with money I got from selling my silver dime collection. So the computer's name is Mercury. Combined the old computers into one good backup, so it got named Caduceus. If I get another, I still have Hermes open.

Find a schtick you are comfortable with and use it to name away.

I'm absolutely terrible with names, so it's usually the first feasible thing that I can think of.

I guess it's obvious what my current rigs are named.
My previous ones were a bit more computer-centric since I had some fun with that hacking-sim game "Uplink" (Main PC rig was some sort of made up company's Mainframe) 😛
That phase kind of wore off though.
