How do you microwave a potato without it turning into a rock?

medium size spud, I'm poking holes in the skin, covering with a wet paper towel and nuking for 8 minutes. that doesn't work.

I rarely attempt to cook any food in the microwave.. only stuff that needs to be warmed up or reheated.

I think the secret would be to cook it at a lower power level for a longer time. But that's just a guess.

I suppose you could try poking holes in it and putting a cup of water in there with it to get some steaming action going.

But yeah...the only things I ever cook in the microwave are things I've already cooked on the stove...and balsa wood.

My microwave has a button that says "potato". I just keep punching it until it's done.

Mine too and I can't tell any difference between the nuked one and the bake ones other than time.

it's a good thing I got the Sam's club jumbo bag, it's gonna take a lot of potatoes to solve this dilemma

Try putting it in for ten to eleven minutes. This is what I do and it comes out NICE and soft.

the best way I have found is to nuke it in a zip lock bag...usually takes about 5 or so.

I should clarify, after 8 the inside is pretty nice but just the skin becomes very hard and crunchable.
