Trying to figure out a good system since I now have a laptop.

Most of my work when at home is still done on the desktop but I'd like to have current files on the laptop when I'm on the go.

Is a cloud-based solution all I have?

Windows Live Mesh (Sync). You can have 5GB of synchronized files that are automatically updated in both locations. It also allows you to remotely sign-on to any PC that you setup. I have been using it for a couple of months and really like it. The file syncing even works if you have a Mac.

For years, I sync'd by using a flash drive with a TrueCrypt volume on it, and I use scripts to keep the appropriate files/locations up to do. It wasn't much of a bother, for data.

Since then, I've realized that it's a *huge* pain in the ass for me to keep multiple PCs up-to-date and completely alike with applications, preferences, etc - it slows me down when I have to think about the differences between PCs. So I have a laptop, and I use it everywhere (work, home, everywhere). When I want to use it like a desktop, I have a dock that I drop it in, and it's magically much like a desktop.

I use a file server to host any data. Before I use my laptop, I copy whatever I need over.

Yes. In fact it's the whole purpose of it.
