How do you manage MIME associations in Windows?

IE is taking WAY TOO LONG to display PNG files because Quicktime has hijacked MIME types.

I don't use alternatives to QuickTime and Adobe Reader on my work computer because I do phone support and I often need to have a similar configuration to the person I'm speaking with.

try:

open quicktime player. go to edit then quicktime preferences. then click on browser and mime settings. (there is probably a quicker way to get here, but this is how i did it)

uncheck whatever you don't want handled by quicktime.

edit: quicker way. go to control panel, click on quicktime. then browser -> mime settings -> win.

Another "WTF, Microsoft?" moment.

Why should we expect bloatware applications to be nice enough to relinquish associations? The OS should give the user complete control. Microsoft took a step back in this regard with Vista and Windows 7.
